Sports!! Softball + Climbing

Due fine-settimana fa, visto che Josh, figlio di Bonni, ci ha iscritto di nascosto al suo torneo di Softball, ci siamo cimentati in sport esoterici.

Two weeks ago, since Josh (Bonni's son) sneakily registered us for his softball league, we've been immersed in weird sports.

Softball è come il baseball solo che la palla e' morbida e più grande di quella del baseball  e il lanciatore lancia la palla dal basso un po' a campana in modo da limitare la velocità e rendere il gioco più adatto a non professionisti.

Softball is like baseball but the ball is a little softer and bigger and the pitcher throws it underhand so its trajectory is slower and more fun for amateurs. 

Sabato mattina siamo andati alle gabbie di battuta (batting cages) per imparare a battere. Mentre io avevo già esperienza giocando nel campo del Cucco a Fermignano davanti casa mia con Giacomo e altri, per Hannah Sarah era la prima volta in assoluto (mi chiedo, chi è il vero americano tra i due??).

Saturday morning we went to the batting cages to learn how to bat. Although I'd already had experience playing in Cucco field in Fermignano in front of my house with Giacomo and others, it was Hannah Sarah's first time ever. (Makes you wonder, which of us is the true American?!)

Dopo 20 o 30 battute siamo andati nella mia palestra per uno sport decisamente più svizzero/europeo: arrampicata. Giusto per curiosità vi faccio vedere qualche foto della mia super galattica palestra di NY. Considerata una delle migliori d'America. Visto lo spazio limitato a Manhattan, è stata costruita galleggiante sul molo sopra il fiume Hudson.

After 20 or 30 hits we went to my gym for a much more Swiss/European sport: rock climbing!  Just to satisfy your curiosity, I'll show you some photos of my super pimped-out NYC gym. It's considered one of the best in America. Considering that space comes at a premium in Manhattan, it's constructed on a pier over the Hudson river.

Domenica ancora mezzi rotti dopo tutte le scalate, pronti a giocare alla nostra prima partita di Softball. C'e' un sito internet, ZogSports, che organizza campionati amatoriali di qualsiasi sport su tutti i campi pubblici a Manhattan e molti altri citta'. Organizzano le gare, prenotano i campetti, chiamano arbitri... Tutto incluso, perfino le magliette!

The next day, with our muscles still recovering from the climbing, we headed out to play our first game of softball. There's a company called ZogSports which organizes amateur championships of every kind of sport across 5 states. They take care of organizing the brackets, reserving the fields, providing umpires... even uniforms!

Ho anche dovuto comprare un nuovo guantone perchè il mio l'ho lasciato in Italia...

I also had to buy a new glove since I left mine in Italy...

E' tempo di terrazza!! / Rooftop time!

Hanno finalmente aperto la terrazza sul tetto del palazzo!!
Purtroppo non c'è la piscina ma ci sono delle sdraio per abbrustolirsi al sole.

Finally our building opened it's rooftop terrace! Unfortunately, there's no pool, but at least there are chaises. It'll be nice to spend summer evenings up there.

Laurea di David / David's Graduation

È una vita che non scriviamo ma la vita frenetica di New York ci ha preso di soprassalto. Iniziamo con l'ultimo evento di questo fine settimana e poi nei prossimi giorni riassumeremo le ultime settimane passate, il viaggio in Florida, compleanno, etc.

It's been ages since we wrote but we'd gotten caught up on the hamster wheel that is the frenetic New York pace of life. Let's start with events from last weekend and then in the coming days we'll summarize the past few weeks.

Il fratello di Sarah, David Eleazar Faich, si è laureato sabato in scienze politiche e come al solito gli americani festeggiano come se avessero vinto la terza guerra mondiale, le olimpiadi e Sanremo tutt'insieme! Celebrazione con inno nazionale, costumi alla Harry Potter, discorsi di gente famosa (a parlare c'era Bloomberg, il sindaco di New York City) e tutti che si complimentavano di quanto sono bravi e belli.

Hannah Sarah's younger brother, David Eleazar Faich, graduated from college on Saturday and as usual the Americans pulled out all the stops with their pomp and circumstance - the Commencement speaker was New York City's mayor!  

L'università si chiama Franklin & Marshall, famosa in Italia soprattutto per la marca di vestiti creata da due italiani che un giorno, trovando un vecchia maglietta del college, hanno avuto la brillante idea di usare il nome dell'università senza chiedere permesso a nessuno. L'università li ha sgamati e ha fatto loro causa e ora prende una percentuale per i diritti d'autore. Ora nel negozio ufficiale dell'università vendono maglie della Franklin & Marshall.

His college is called Franklin & Marshall, which - even though it's one of the oldest in America - is more famous in Italy for being the name of a clothing company created by two Italians who had the brilliant idea of using the school's name without asking permission. The school sued and now takes licensing fees from them. The official giftshop at Franklin & Marshall (college) sells Franklin & Marshall (brand) shirts!

L'università si trova a Lancaster, a circa un'ora e mezza a ovest di Philadelphia.
The college is in Lancaster, about an hour and a half west of Philadelphia.




L'entrata degli studenti e professori è stata in processione con stendardi e musica di sottofondo. Per avere una migliore idea dell'atmosfera vi ho messo la canzone classica di apertura della cerimonia.

La processione degli studenti. Purtroppo tra la calca ci siamo persi l'entrata di David... Da notare che ogni studente indossa delle cordicelle colorate che rappresentano i vari riconoscimenti accademici.  David ne indossava un "quintale" (questo l'ha detto Sarah).

Unfortunately we never got a glimpse of David's entrance in the crowd during the students' procession... Notice that they wear colorful cords on top of their robes, which signify the different honors societies or awards each student earned. David was wearing a bunch!

Questo è Bloomberg che ha ricevuto una laurea ad honorem come ricompensa del lavoro fatto dopo l'11 settembre. E anche perché se non regalano lauree ad honorem, nessuno prepara un discorso di mezz'ora per una cerimonia di lauree:

This is Mayor Bloomberg, who was awarded an honorary degree in part due to his leadership after September 11th. Also because, if they didn't give out honorary degrees, nobody would agree to the daunting task of advising hungover seniors about life outside the grassy quad:

Scuola di Trapezio / Trapeze School

Da piccolo ho sempre sognato di andare a scuola di circo e diventare un vero trapezista!

...o anche no...

When I was little, I always dreamed of going to circus school and becoming a trapeze artist!

Fatto sta che questa settimana siamo andati a scuola di trapezio! Il mio team di Engineering Productivity a Google ha organizzato questo evento come una delle nostre uscite sociali. Quando l'ho sentito non avevo nemmeno capito di che cosa si trattava. Poi arrivati nel posto e vedendo l'attrezzatura ho iniziato a sospettare qualcosa...

As it turns out, my childhood dreams were realized this week because I went to trapeze class!  My Google team, Engineering Productivity, organized this event as a social outing. When I heard about it, I wasn't even sure what it was. Then when we arrived at the rooftop and I saw the equipment, I started to suspect it was a more unusual team-bonding exercise... 

Abbiamo iniziato col riscaldamento...  

We started with warm-ups...

Poi il tizio ci ha mostrato i passi:

1. Partenza con salto dalla piattaforma
2. Normale
3. Tirare su le gambe
4. A testa in giù
5. Ritirarsi su
6. Gambe avanti indietro tre volte e poi salto all'indietro

Questo è lui (si vede che ci sa fare...)

Then the guy showed us the moves: Jumping off the platform, swinging, hanging by your legs, pulling yourself back up, and dismounting.  This is him (you can tell he knows what he's doing!) ...

E questo sono io alle prese con l'ultima prova (la più difficile) che consisteva nel sincronizzarsi con un'altra persona e attaccarsi a lui sganciandosi dal proprio trapezio.

And here's me when I was doing my 3rd jump (the most difficult) which involved synchronizing my swings with another guy, grabbing his arms and letting go of my own trapeze. 

L'attività principale è stata il trapezio, poi c'era anche scuola di giocoliere e di salto acrobatico sul tappeto elastico.

After we'd had our adrenaline rush, we learned to juggle and do acrobatics on a trampoline. 

Che faccia da pirla!

What a loser! 

Da notare il mio completo sportivo per l'occasione (mi sono totalmente dimenticato e mi sono presentato in maglioncino con scarpe e pantaloni eleganti).

Note my athletic outfit for the occasion - I'd totally forgotten to pack sports clothes so I was the most well-dressed acrobat of the day.  

Questo è il mio collega Sayeesh con cui lavoro tutti i giorni, venendo da un paesino dell'India non aveva mai saltato su un tappeto elastico. Si vede dalla sua faccia sorpresa!

This is my colleague Sayeesh, who I sit next to and eat lunch with on most days. He just moved here from a remote town in India and had never jumped on a trampoline before. You can read the nervous surprise on his face!
