E' tempo di terrazza!! / Rooftop time!

Finally our building opened it's rooftop terrace! Unfortunately, there's no pool, but at least there are chaises. It'll be nice to spend summer evenings up there.

It's been ages since we wrote but we'd gotten caught up on the hamster wheel that is the frenetic New York pace of life. Let's start with events from last weekend and then in the coming days we'll summarize the past few weeks.

Hannah Sarah's younger brother, David Eleazar Faich, graduated from college on Saturday and as usual the Americans pulled out all the stops with their pomp and circumstance - the Commencement speaker was New York City's mayor!

His college is called Franklin & Marshall, which - even though it's one of the oldest in America - is more famous in Italy for being the name of a clothing company created by two Italians who had the brilliant idea of using the school's name without asking permission. The school sued and now takes licensing fees from them. The official giftshop at Franklin & Marshall (college) sells Franklin & Marshall (brand) shirts!

The college is in Lancaster, about an hour and a half west of Philadelphia.

The students and professors marched in a procession with flags and an orchestra. To give you a better feel of the atmosphere, press play below:

Unfortunately we never got a glimpse of David's entrance in the crowd during the students' procession... Notice that they wear colorful cords on top of their robes, which signify the different honors societies or awards each student earned. David was wearing a bunch!

Some students decorated their mortarboards with puffy paint or feathers!

Ecco i professori, c'è chi insegna difesa contro le arti oscure, chi pozioni, chi incantesimi:
And here are their professors, who teach defense against the dark arts, potions, and spells:

This is Mayor Bloomberg, who was awarded an honorary degree in part due to his leadership after September 11th. Also because, if they didn't give out honorary degrees, nobody would agree to the daunting task of advising hungover seniors about life outside the grassy quad:

C'era una marea di gente...
There was a boatload of people...

And here, for your listening pleasure, we present David's special moment.

After the ceremony, everyone headed to the Quidditch field for a reception.

Ecco la meritata laurea, ovviamente scritta in latino.
And here is the hard-earned diploma - written in Latin, of course!

Congratulazioni David!

...o anche no...

When I was little, I always dreamed of going to circus school and becoming a trapeze artist!

J.K.!

As it turns out, my childhood dreams were realized this week because I went to trapeze class!  My Google team, Engineering Productivity, organized this event as a social outing. When I heard about it, I wasn't even sure what it was. Then when we arrived at the rooftop and I saw the equipment, I started to suspect it was a more unusual team-bonding exercise...

Abbiamo iniziato col riscaldamento...
We started with warm-ups...

  1. Partenza con salto dalla piattaforma
  2. Normale
  3. Tirare su le gambe
  4. A testa in giù
  5. Ritirarsi su
  6. Gambe avanti indietro tre volte e poi salto all'indietro

Then the guy showed us the moves: Jumping off the platform, swinging, hanging by your legs, pulling yourself back up, and dismounting.  This is him (you can tell he knows what he's doing!) ...

This is a colleague of mine who chickened out when it came time to dismount at the end:

And here's me when I was doing my 3rd jump (the most difficult) which involved synchronizing my swings with another guy, grabbing his arms and letting go of my own trapeze.

After we'd had our adrenaline rush, we learned to juggle and do acrobatics on a trampoline.

Che faccia da pirla!
What a loser!

Note my athletic outfit for the occasion - I'd totally forgotten to pack sports clothes so I was the most well-dressed acrobat of the day.

This is my colleague Sayeesh, who I sit next to and eat lunch with on most days. He just moved here from a remote town in India and had never jumped on a trampoline before. You can read the nervous surprise on his face!

Statua della libertà, pizza e Central Park

Pronti,

Hello!  This was our first weekend in NYC that the weather was not glacial, so we managed to catch the ferry to Staten Island to enjoy views of the Statue of Liberty and then spent Sunday wandering the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park.

Sabato / Saturday

The ferry to Staten Island is a free public service which is full of tourists snapping photos of the Statue of Liberty while the boat passes by.

Tirava un vento che ribaltava!
It was so windy, we could barely keep our eyes open!

Nessuno vuole restare bloccato a Staten Island! Poveri sfigati chi ci abita!

The funny thing is that once you actually arrive at Staten Island, 95% of passengers run from the Arrivals gate to Departures to grab the same boat for the return trip. Nobody wants to be stuck on Staten Island! Poor losers who live there! (Probably taking this trip on a Saturday is not very representative of the usual, commuting population.) Anyway, geographically it should belong to New Jersey even though it's one of the 5 boroughs of New York.

Back in the civilized world (aka Manhattan), we tested an Italian pizzeria that my Italian colleagues had suggested: Pizzeria Number 28.

www.numero28.com

Camerieri tutti rigorosamente italiani!

There was a long queue of people waiting outside the popular restaurant. Fortunately, the always-prepared Sarah booked us a table from her iPhone with the app OpenTable while we were already en route and we snagged a table without delay. ultimately, the pizza was OK ... nothing special but at least we found a place where they do Italian-style instead of New York style pizza (which the Italians only recognize as the giant triangles eaten by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). The winning factor: all the waitstaff were from Italy!

Domenica / Sunday

Domenica siamo andati al Metropolitan Museum.
Sunday we went to the Metropolitan Museum.

Forty thousand square feet of art. We snuck in for free (thanks Google!) and got lost a couple of times between Matisse and Picasso. At the last minute, we tried to see the studiolo of Gubbio, but we got thrown out at closing time.

Best part about the museum? The pretzel cart in front of the entrance!  It was as tasty as any we'd had in Switzerland.

We walked home from there (2.5 miles) through Central Park, with its cherry trees in full bloom.

Then we stumbled across a skate festival. They closed a road through the park and there was a ton of skaters dance-skating around a DJ. Some were goofy old men who cracked us up, others did some impressive stunts like pirouettes.

Ste cose capitano solo a New York!
An old guy in drag with a parrot and a painted dog... Just a typical day in New York!
